Un certain narrateur, dénommé Jack, employé insignifiant, développe un double de lui aussi libre, violent et nihiliste que lui est asservi, faible et complexé. Un effet miroir déjanté et destructeur qui l’empêche de nouer des relations sociables normales. Même lorsqu’apparaît dans sa vie le personnage de Marla, Jack se réfugie instinctivement dans le déni et préfère s’imaginer une triangulaire malsaine où son alter ego Tyler accomplit aisément et insolemment tout ce dont lui se sent incapable. Une instabilité psychique et émotionnelle matérialisée par les déchirures sur la toile et symbolisant l’aliénation des individus à un système qui les broie.
