Derived from Chinese folklore, each year in the lunar calendar is named after an animal. The 12 Chinese Zodiac signs in order are Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig.

This artwork depicts all the 12 animals sailing in the same "Dragon Boat", symbolizing the "descendants of the dragon” pulling together through adversity and toward a shared future for all. The dragon is the fifth animal in the zodiac cycle and is considered China’s most important cultural symbol.

In traditional Chinese culture, the Chinese zodiac is very important and exists as a reflection of Chinese philosophy. Chinese folkways held that one's personality is related to the attributes of their zodiac animal. The belief that everyone and every animal has a role to play in society translates well with Confucian beliefs in a hierarchical society. Just as Confucian beliefs persist in Asia today alongside more modern social views, so does the use of the zodiac.

Originating from China, the zodiac and its variations remain popular in many East Asian and Southeast Asian countries.

Hong Da is a contemporary Chinese artist based in Beijing. His love for art was rooted in his father, who is a Chinese folk-art hobbyist on clay sculpture and wood carving. Hong Da dreamed to be a painting artist when he was a child, and so he followed his instinct all the way along.

One of the key inspirations of Hong's painting style was his memories of the insufficiency of toy building blocks in his childhood. When he started painting, he translated all the structures of the toy building blocks in memories into his artworks as a way of healing. Gradually and accidentally, he found his art style.

He is kind of obsessed with analyzing the structures of everything presented to his view, and nothing cannot be deconstructed and reconstructed in his eyes. His exploration and discovery of the spiritual world resonates in a symphony of colors and geometric shapes.

Painting has become a key part of Hong Da’s life. It is a tranquilizer for his soul, and also his dialogue with the unknown.

Hong Da is currently represented by a few galleries in BeijingHanJian Fine Art Gallery / Tree Art Museum / UCvibes / BoundedSpace 798
