About the author t1i28
Spyros Koikas, a contemporary Greek sculptor, is widely known as "The Sidewalk Sculptor," a nickname earned when a colleague first noticed him working outside on the street. This unconventional workspace became a symbol of his dedication to art, demonstrating that creativity knows no bounds. Despite working on the sidewalk, Spyros embraced the opportunity to bring art directly to the public, offering a glimpse of culture to those who might not have sought it otherwise, particularly the younger generation. His nickname serves as a testament to his ion for art and his commitment to sharing it with the world around him.
Born in Piraeus in 1972, Spyros discovered his ion for art at a very young age, seeking an outlet to express his emotions and concerns. He honed his skills at the Ceramics/Pottery School, studying under esteemed professors like Kostas Tarkasis, Effie Papaioannou, Maria Vlanti, and George Mitsios. However, it was his encounter with the sculptor Michalis Kassis that steered him toward sculpture, with marble becoming his primary medium. He furthered his studies at the Tinos School of Fine Arts, where he was guided by professors George Silikos, Giannis Maniatakos, and Dimitris Bezas, among others.
Spyros's professional journey experienced a significant interruption with a 12-year hiatus from art, but he made a powerful comeback in 2018. This return marked a reconnection with his artistic roots and a revitalization of his creative spirit. His work, deeply conceptual, often tackles social issues shaped by his environment and society, infused with rich symbolism and emotional depth. Spyros Koikas is a member of the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece, continuing to make his mark on the world of contemporary sculpture.
