Gleb Skubachevsky 1c4o2r
Gleb Skubachevsky, a contemporary Russian painter, underwent a transformative phase in his artistic journey while studying in the studio of Aidan Salakhova and Sergey Ossovsky at the Moscow State Academic Art Institute named after V.I. Surikov. Under their mentorship, Gleb's unique artistic concept began to take shape, marking a significant turning point in his art biography.
Exploring the possibilities of materials and pushing the boundaries of reference, Gleb Skubachevsky ventured into creating expansive canvases. In 2015, he further expanded his repertoire at the Dukley European Art Community, where he developed a distinctive technique at the intersection of painting and plasticity. Utilizing ornate, fragile volumes of paper mounted on a wooden frame, his artworks transcend the two-dimensional plane without sacrificing the essence of pictorial abstraction.
Gleb Skubachevsky's artistic exploration extends beyond the confines of his studio, as he actively participates in numerous art residencies worldwide. Collaborating with talented artists from diverse cultural backgrounds, he absorbs their works and concepts, contributing to his ongoing education and understanding of different cultures. The artist remains in a perpetual state of search, continually seeking new creative ideas and techniques, evolving from large canvases to intricate objects and sculptures.
Recognition followed in 2016 when Gleb entered the Top 100 list of recognized young Russian artists, according to INART magazine. He also boasts two UNESCO awards for his participation in art symposiums—Patras Art Fair and the Athina Art Fair.
Private collections around the globe house Gleb Skubachevsky's works, from Great Britain and Montenegro to Greece, Italy, Austria, , Slovakia, Switzerland, , Brazil, Dubai, Georgia, Turkey, and China.
In Gleb's own words, anything has the potential to be material for artwork, aligning with his philosophy rooted in pragmatism. His artistic practice is a manifestation of aesthetic experience, and he remains in constant exploration, creating paintings, sculptures, and installations in his unique technique, utilizing fragile mediums.
Skubachevsky's art practice delves into topics that universally captivate humanity. He explores the symbiosis of plastic and pictorial expressiveness, generating visual variations of extraterrestrial forms and the primary source of life. Employing microscopic optics and natural scientific tools of cognition, he crafts alienated forms that intrigue and provoke thought.
Operating within the paradigm of metamodernism, Gleb Skubachevsky seeks a delicate balance between experimental form and material, between clarity and ambiguity. His works, simultaneously alien and familiar, exude extreme fragility and aggression. This delicate equilibrium allows him to create and explore images of alternative life forms, offering a glimpse into a potential reality of the future.

MAGICAL RITUALS • 12 artworks 34p4v
View allIn this series of graphics I proceeded from pragmatism and minimalism, trying to use a minimum of mediums. Initially, I started making sketches of different simple creatures on paper, but it turned out to be graphic expressionism.
Some works are light and almost transparent, and some - noisy and saturated.
In the process of drawing, I had a feeling that I was performing some kind of magical ritual. Therefore, I decided to call this series “Magical rituals”.

The colours of nature are unusual and varied and make very amazing combinations. I work in my recognizable author's paper technique, selecting and summarizing stunning natural colors and illustrating the beauty of the world, highlighting the main and important details by using transitional shades and, based on these colour nuances, I’m creating really natural-abstract paintings, as if they are growing from the surface of the canvas.

It's been a while since I made graphics on canvas. I haven’t worked in this technique the last few years, although I really like it! This is a miniature on canvas 25 x 25 cm, made with very hard pencils 4H and 5H. If we look back in 2015-2016, a part of my diploma work was drawn on canvas, and part was made as a paper object. I have had a flash back and decided to make a new graphic artwork in miniature. In this video - some stages of creation.

the «Colours of Nature» series

Creating such an artwork is a huge amount of time and meticulous work. Thousands of handmade villi, twisted, glued, painted, and then all this needs to be assembled and fixed well... The whole process took 3 weeks of everyday full time work. I was afraid it that I would never come to the end. There were several stages: twisting the paper villi, gluing and painting them, cutting it to the required length and gluing it according to the sketched composition. It took a lot of paper, glue, acrylics of different shades of blue. At one moment I ran out of all the materials and had to buy more. I was also afraid that the canvas would be very heavy, because it will be sent to the Art Fair in Luxembourg. However, everything turned out in the best possible way. The artwork was made completely with Daler Rowney acrylic paints.

I started this series from the idea of simplicity and duality: monochrome, black & white. But suddenly got a diversity of shadows of gray, as the result of interference of pure colours.
The last stage of the work is a composition of small peaks that take the artwork out of two-dimensional space into a 3D object. By the way, the villi are very durable, but at the same time elastic. Feel free to touch them if you want.
