Le clinamen, une infime déviation des atomes que Lucrèce décrit dans De rerum natura (Livre II). Selon la physique épicurienne, les atomes chutent verticalement dans le vide, mus uniquement par la gravité. Mais, écrit Lucrèce, il arrive que, sans cause apparente, ils s’écartent légèrement de leur trajectoire, un écart si subtil qu’on peine à en mesurer l’ampleur.

C’est ce minuscule dérèglement qui rend possible toute création. Sans lui, les atomes tomberaient éternellement, sans jamais se rencontrer, comme une pluie figée dans l’infini. Le monde resterait vide, figé dans la nécessité. Par ce geste de rupture, aussi discret soit-il, naît la collision, l’interaction, et donc la nature elle-même.
