Riptide focuses attention on the turmoil at its center. Colorful and seemingly serene, the composition comes to life around the dragon, struggling with the tide. Layers of blue, turquoise, and lime green emerge from the background in dimensional relief. Architectural and craft artifacts are upcycled from sources around the world, especially Asia, and combine to create a picture of turbulence, as the pieces wrestle across the broad wood surface. If you’ve ever been a surfer, I hope the emotion contained in the composition recalls your determination, strength and fortitude.

In his latest series, Jeff Doud explores three-dimensional wooden sculptures crafted with eclectic remnants and salvage from scrap bins around the world, along with painted cut pieces from his own studio work. These fragments channel the embedded energy of countless hours of human effort into expressive, robust new forms. Jeff captures the inherent humanity from these diverse sources, each construction possessing its own stories, secrets, and opportunities for exploration. Jeff’s latest collection showcases ionate creative experimentation, injecting spirited personality into simple hand-hewn dowel and glue compositions. Incorporating materials from diverse crafts such as weaving, and printing, and integrating worn objects such as musical instruments and children’s toys, the creations are striking, confident, playful, and full of optimism.

Born in Santa Monica, California in 1954, Jeff Doud has shown in group and solo exhibitions in Atlanta, Berlin, and West Palm Beach. His creations and commissioned works can be found in private collections from LA to NY. He resides in Atlanta, Georgia, where he has lived and worked in the creative arts for over thirty years.
