Marie-Joëlle Cherqui is a contemporary French artist who has developed a diverse and unique body of work, rooted in her extensive training and career. After completing her studies in Paris, she graduated from the Applied Arts program at ENSAAMA (École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d'Art) and ENSCI (École Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle) in Textile Design. For 30 years, Cherqui worked as a stylist in decoration in Paris, specializing in textiles and creating bespoke rugs.
In 2022, Marie-Joëlle Cherqui relocated to Ouistreham in Normandy, where she established her studio and began focusing on producing original and personal works. Her studio is open for visits by appointment, allowing visitors to experience her creative process firsthand.
Cherqui's work, grounded in plastic research, explores the four elements—air, water, earth, and fire. She predominantly works with paper collages, first painting the paper with acrylics before tearing, cutting, assembling, and gluing the pieces onto canvas. This tactile approach allows her to convey the dynamic and transformative qualities of the natural elements in her compositions.
