NANSEI SAKAGAMI is a Japanese artist who left behind elegant Japanese paintings that strongly express Japanese culture. He was a one-of-a-kind, versatile painter who excelled not only in Japanese painting but also in oil painting and watercolor painting, and created works that incorporated his own techniques, with a wide range of expression from Japanese to Western, classical to modern.
He was born in Ise City, Mie Prefecture in 1947.When he was young, he was interested in Western painting as well as Japanese literature, and became familiar with classics such as the Tale of Genji, the Manyoshu, and waka poetry. In 1975, he entered the Department of Painting, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. While studying oil painting energetically, he began to teach himself Japanese painting. Eventually, his desire for the world of Yamato-e painting grew, and he began to walk the path of "contemporary Yamato-e painting in oil painting," but he was completely captivated by the beauty of Japanese painting's mineral pigments and gold and silver foil mud. He continued to learn Japanese painting on his own, and produced many elegant Yamato-e works using classical techniques. His vivid watercolors were widely used to illustrate newspaper serial novels and booklets, captivating many viewers.
NANSEI SAKAGAMI's lifelong policy as a painter was, "I want to be a painter who can give energy, joy, dreams and hope to the people who see my work. Those are my dreams and hopes." With this in mind, he continued to paint, always wishing for people's happiness.
