Ranulf Streuff wurde 1950 in Bitburg / Eifel  geboren und wuchs in einem kleinen Dorf am Nordrand der Eifel auf. Schon früh erwachte sein Interesse für Natur, die Wissenschaften und die Musik. Er schloss seine Schullaufbahn mit dem Abitur ab und begann 1968 in Bonn ein Studium der Physik. Nach dem Vordiplom und längerer Erkrankung wechselte er das Studienfach und studierte in Mainz Kunst (für das Lehramt) mit Schwerpunkt Holzskulptur und -design bei Helmut Stark. Dort lernte er den Umgang mit Metall und Holz.

 Von 1978 bis 2015 unterrichtete er Kunst an der Domschule in Schleswig. Seit dem Studium war er als Maler und Bildhauer aktiv, wobei die Skulptur nach und nach seine bevorzugte Ausdrucksform wurde.

Hierin bestärkte ihn seit den 80er Jahren der Galerist Friedrich Könning (Schleswig), bei dem er bis zu dessen Tod ständig mit Skulpturen vertreten war.

Ein weiterer wichtiger Einfluss war die Begegnung mit dem Maler Gerhard Wendland, der ihn ermutigte, stärker zu abstrahieren. Dennoch blieb das Literarische bis heute ein wichtiges Element in Streuffs Werk.
