Sénou Fofana est né en 1962 à Séféto au Mali.
Il a été formé à l'Institut National des Arts (INA) de Bamako.
Pendant sept ans, de 1986 à 1993, il travaille et se forme avec le groupe Bogolan Kasobané qui a oeuvré pour l'utilisation de la technique traditionnelle du bogolan comme moyen d'expression artistique pour les artistes contemporains.
Puis, il se lance dans des expositions en son nom propre. Il fait des expositions individuelles et collectives dans des lieux tels que le Centre Culturel Français de Bamako en 1993 et 1998, le Musée National de Bamako en 1997 et 2008.
Il cherche alors ses propres moyens d'expression technique ainsi que ses propres voies de création. Il se lance dans l'utilisation du gauffré, autre technique traditionnelle utilisée pour la fabrication des vêtements et basée sur la couture. Il crée des tableaux avec cette technique mais aussi e à de plus grands formats permettant une création plus libérée.
De 2000 à 2007, il e sept ans en . L'absence des matériaux de base utiles à la réalisation de tableaux en bogolan et gauffré le pousse à chercher d'autres s et matériaux. Il se lance également dans la sculpture avec l'association "espace Bourdelle" à Montauban.
Sa volonté de retrouver les reliefs du gauffré l'amène à pratiquer la technique du métal repoussé. Il récupère des tuyaux en aluminium qu'il frappe pour leur donner du relief et les intègre dans ses créations.
Toujours pour trouver le relief, il se met à rechercher et intégrer toutes sortes de matières dans ses tableaux.
Cependant, très attaché au bogolan, les couleurs qu'il utilise en restent toujours proches et il poursuit une recherche importante pour utiliser des pigments naturels de toutes sortes.
En , il participe à de nombreuses expositions dont entre autres: à Toulouse dans le cadre des expositions "Afriques sur toiles" organisées par l'association Garonafrique, à Cajarc dans le cadre du festival Africajarc, à Montauban, à la MJC de Neuilly-sur-Seine...
Il fait une formation d'infographiste, pendant deux ans et demi.
En août 2007, il revient vivre au Mali et reprend la création en utilisant les pigments naturels du bogolan auxquels il ajoute l'indigo. Il crée lui-même ses s et collecte toutes sortes de matériaux naturels (graines, écorces, ...) et de récupération (fers, plastiques, ...) qu'il utilise dans ses créations. Il reprend également la sculpture sur bois.

Il réside actuellement à Siby au Mali.
