Born in 1962 in Montreuil, Thierry Sorin lives and works in the Paris region. Trained as a graphic designer, with a brief stint at the Beaux-Arts de la ville de Paris, this visual artist developed a ion for drawing, collage and photography at a very young age. He won his first photographic prize awarded by Kodak at the age of 10.
He draws his inspiration from the work of Raymond Hains and Jacques Villeglé, the surrealist collages of Jacques Prévert, street art and pop art... Coming from the punk movement, he researches and experiments with different techniques before finally opting for a mixed, made from collages, paint and stencils.
When digital technology arrived, he focused his work on photography and video. He exhibits regularly and is rewarded several times.
In 2016, he felt the need to broaden his creative field, and returned to the studio to develop his pictorial work towards a more contemporary and more urban language.
His creations are regularly exhibited in various Parisian galleries specializing in urban arts.
We find his stencils and collages in the streets of Paris and elsewhere.
Do It Yourself...
Whether paintings, collages, sculptures, the production is based on the use of recycled materials and the diversion of objects.
The artist gives us some keys to understand his approach, his way of working and better understand his works.
The search for materials
The research begins in the street, the corridors of the metro by collecting posters, then in the Emmaüs centers to acquire other materials necessary for the production of his works, canvases on blank or already painted stretchers, frames... It is also an opportunity to unearth heterogeneous objects, in working order or damaged, they will be transformed into an assembly.
The quest continues on evenings when the "bulky" are on the sidewalk. Everyday objects, toys, books, road signs, construction materials, leaflets, magazines...
Sometimes the inspiration comes as soon as the unearthed object is taken in hand and the artist immediately gets to work. Other times, the object returns to its stock before experiencing a new life.
Stencil work
The artist creates the stencils that he then uses on his works, from one of his drawings or an existing image. The pattern can also be reworked on the computer to differentiate areas of similar colors and create a series of layers. Stencils are also used for text.
Collage
The artist uses this technique which brings together in a single space separate elements from different sources to create a balanced composition that abolishes the boundaries of sculpture and painting. He draws his inspiration from his daily life and from current cultural and political events. He translates his vision of the world through his collages.
